Total Family Health Organization launches new brand of Ebony condoms

Accra, GHANA – On the evening of October 28, 2022, the highly-anticipated Ebony condom made its entry on the Ghanaian market with a splash. The Ebony condom is the newest product in a suite of health commodities promoted by Total Family Health Organisation, a Ghanaian social marketing organization supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The star-studded launch event at the Fantasy Dome brought together high-level representatives from the Government of Ghana; USAID dignitaries; health practitioners; influencers; and Heads of Industry, who joined forces to bring awareness to the new condom.

Ms. Elizabeth Williams, USAID/Ghana Health Systems Strengthening Team Lead, reiterated USAID’s to improve access, demand, and uptake of high impact health products and interventions, including contraceptives.

Low use of modern contraceptive methods leads to unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and higher overall maternal mortality. USAID’s pledge is to work with the Government of Ghana and the private sector to ensure that contraceptive options are available. In 2021, we supported the procurement of $8.2 million dollars worth of contraceptives for use in Ghana.”

The United States is Ghana’s largest bilateral development donor and the world’s largest family planning bilateral donor.  Through USAID, the United States is a central partner in the Family Planning 2030 (FP2030) partnership, a global alliance aimed at empowering women and girls by investing in rights-based family planning, of which Ghana is a signatory.  Expanding access to a wide variety of family planning options, including condoms, will enable couples and individuals to determine whether, when and how often to have children. This is vital to safe motherhood, healthy families and prosperous communities and for Ghana to achieve its development goals.

The Ebony condom is the first condom brand in the West Africa region to be co-packaged with lubricants. The condoms are attractive and sexy, making them appealing to youth; and are available in four flavors and colors– Vanilla (natural latex), Strawberry (red), Peppermint (green), and Chocolate (dark brown).  They are 100% electronically tested and manufactured to meet the highest international quality standards (ISO 40742015) to provide ultimate protection and pleasure.  Ebony condoms are affordable and safe, and provide protection to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and improve access to family planning options for Ghanaians.
